Deans’ Message

Welcome to Computer Engineering!

A warm welcome to the Computer Engineering programme, jointly offer by NUS Engineering and NUS School of Computing (SoC).

Founded more than 60 years ago, NUS Engineering is the first in Singapore to deliver professional engineering education. Through our staff and graduates, the Faculty has played a key role in the growth of Singapore and her successful development as a nation. Today, we are among the top in worldwide rankings of engineering and technology institutions (11th according to Quacquarelli Symonds and 21st according to the Times Higher Education). Similarly, NUS SoC is one of the best Computing schools in the world (4th according to Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings in Computer Science and Information Systems)! SoC faculty members are committed and inspiring teachers, who are also internationally recognised experts in Computing.

Alongside rankings, the consistent recognition accorded to us by scientific and research bodies cements our reputation as the institution that nurtures youth to engineer the future. Ours is a rich culture of distinguished scholarship, whereby engineering fundamentals, rooted rigorously in mathematics and science, and coupled with practical problem solving skills, are instilled in graduates. Such training is the cornerstone that will equip you to push the boundaries of technology, formulate creative engineering solutions and emerge as Engineer-Leaders.

Graduates today enter an increasingly complex and competitive global environment. Many aspire to apply firmly-grounded, creative computing and engineering skills to advance and shape society through taking on a wide range of roles and responsibilities.

NUS Computer Engineering offers you the opportunity to tailor your undergraduate experience and acquire valuable knowledge, while keeping your aspirations firmly in sight. A unique multi-disciplinary programme, NUS Computer Engineering transcends the traditional boundary of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering to equip you with a combination of hardware and software expertise that has become so crucial today. You will enjoy the resources and opportunities offered by both host departments (Computer Science and

Electrical & Computer Engineering) and faculties (College of Design and Engineering and School of Computing).

Burning to address real-world problems through innovative solutions?

We provide opportunities for pro-active learners from various disciplines to work together on solving complex problems. Through close interaction with relevant stakeholders, students formulate realistic and challenging projects. They then team up to identify user needs, understand cultural and social sensitivities, and harness their multidisciplinary knowledge to design solutions to real problems.

Students may also choose to immerse themselves in start-up environments to learn the basics of innovations, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Such experience will enable you to seize opportunities generated through well-executed projects.

Aiming to stretch your academic talents to postgraduate studies?

For those with a high capacity, the Engineering Scholars Programme provides an avenue for completion of your Bachelor of Engineering degree in a shorter time. During this period, E-Scholars spend six months at a local or overseas startup company via NUS Overseas Colleges. Moreover, special seminars will be organized to facilitate interaction with prominent leaders in business and other fields. This programme also prepares students to proceed to postgraduate studies, either locally or overseas, immediately upon graduation.

Keen to experience a foreign environment and develop a global mindset?

Spend a semester at one of our many overseas partner universities through the Student Exchange Programme; our partners include top-notch institutions such as John Hopkins University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, and Université Pierre et Marie Curie. We are also the only faculty in the world that runs exchange programmes with both Oxford and Cambridge universities.

There are numerous other pathways and programmes that NUS Engineering and NUS SoC offers, many of which are the first of their kind in Singapore. Take full advantage of these opportunities to enrich and enhance your learning journey.

We would also like to extend an invitation to you to attend the College Open House on 3 and 9 March 2024 and the Computing Open House on 4 and 9 March 2024.

In short, we look forward to welcoming you to the NUS Engineering and NUS SoC family. You will be joining a community committed to the advancement of a safer, greener, healthier and better-connected world!

With best wishes
